Mobile EV Charging: Why Brussels Needs PowerCourier

Rays Technology ·

Belgium is accelerating its transition to electric vehicles. From 2026, all new company cars must be zero-emission, and Brussels has implemented a Low Emission Zone that will progressively ban combustion engines. But there's a problem: where will all these EVs charge?

The Brussels Charging Challenge

Brussels faces unique obstacles to EV adoption:

  • 60% of residents live in apartments without access to private parking or home charging.
  • Underground parking garages require expensive electrical upgrades for fixed chargers (often €50,000-200,000 per building).
  • Street-side charging is limited by permit processes, grid capacity, and urban aesthetics.
  • Public fast chargers concentrate along highways, not where city residents park daily.

What is Mobile EV Charging?

Mobile charging flips the traditional model: instead of building charging stations and expecting drivers to come to them, we bring the charger to the vehicle. PowerCourier's mobile charging units are essentially batteries on wheels, equipped with DC fast charging capability up to 150 kW.

How PowerCourier Works

  1. Request: Open the web app, set your vehicle's location on the map.
  2. AI Dispatch: Our algorithm finds the optimal charging unit based on distance, battery level, and your energy needs.
  3. Real-time Tracking: Watch your assigned unit navigate Brussels streets on a live map.
  4. Charging: The unit connects to your vehicle and delivers up to 150 kW of DC fast charging.
  5. Notification: Get an alert when charging is complete. Pay through the app.

Target Scenarios in Brussels

Underground Parking

Brussels has thousands of underground parking spaces in buildings like Parking 58, Parking Albertine, and countless residential garages. Installing fixed chargers requires costly electrical infrastructure upgrades. PowerCourier units can navigate parking structures and charge vehicles in place.

Office Buildings

The European Quarter alone hosts hundreds of thousands of workers. Offering EV charging as an employee benefit — without infrastructure investment — makes PowerCourier attractive for employers and building managers.

Port of Antwerp-Bruges

Europe's second-largest port is electrifying its vehicle fleet. Mobile charging provides flexible, high-power charging across the port's vast area without fixed infrastructure in every location.

Environmental Impact

Mobile charging units are charged from the grid during off-peak hours (often from renewable sources) and deliver that stored energy during the day. This load-shifting reduces grid strain and increases the effective use of renewable energy. Each PowerCourier unit can deliver approximately 1,000 kWh per day, supporting 15-20 vehicles.
